THE MOTHERHOOD BEHIND MALQUERIDAS: INTERVIEW WITH TANA GILBERT FROM VENICE

September 8, 2023

Discover the unique vision of the director Tana Gilbert in her debut film, Malqueridas, which premiered today in Venice and closed the competition with a bang.

CinemaChile had privileged access to talk previously with the director and also live onsite all the emotions that were experienced during the premiere in the Venice International Critics’ Week (autonomous section and parallel to the Venice Film Festival).

A participation that makes history as the first Chilean documentary and the only one in Latin America in competition, in addition to having the presence of Karina Sanchez, one of the protagonists of the documentary.

MALQUERIDAS AND ITS SUCCESSFUL DEBUT IN VENICE

This powerful documentary, produced by Errante Producciones and co-produced by Dirk Manthey has been acclaimed at festivals such as Visions du Réel, Cannes Docs and of course Venice where the team received excellent reviews from the specialized industry and audience that attended the premiere.

With stealthy images captured by banned cell phones, Gilbert immerses us in a deep archive of collective memory inside the prison, where children grow distanced from their mothers and mutual support between these women becomes a powerful form of resistance.

If you’re looking forward to reliving these stories and diving into the mighty universe of Malqueridas, we have good news for you!  The film will have its Chilean premiere at FICValdivia (9-15 October) in the official selection of international feature films and is expected to be released soon.

But if you want to have the exclusive and transport to the successful opening day, do not miss this interview with Tana Gilbert.

Prepare the popcorn, play the video and enjoy the direct trip to Venice 2023!
