Chile in Malaga: Three documentaries in competition and nine projects in the industry section

This year, Chile surprises with the participation of La nieve entre los dos  (Errante)  , Otro sol  (Araucaria Cine)  and La diosa quebrada (Ximena Pereira), the three Chilean documentaries in co-production with fellow countries that will be part of the official competition.

And that’s not all, Chile is also well represented by actors Antonia Zegers, Luisa Mayol and Matías Rebolledo who will be members of the Jury, while Gabriela Sandoval will be part of the jury in the area of industry Málaga WIP Spain.

The MAFIZ market has a strong Chilean presence by introducing nine projects. In addition to this, SANFIC, SANFIC Industria and Yagan Films are collaborating with awards and prizes in market competitions.

CHILEAN DOCUMENTARIES IN THE OFFICIAL SELECTION

The 2024 Malaga Film Festival will witness the new Chilean creations, with the outstanding participation of three productions in the official competition.

Documentaries/Feature Films Official Section

Two Chilean productions will be part of the official selection of feature documentaries at the Malaga Film Festival. On the one hand, La nieve entre los dos by Pablo Martínez Pessi. A co-production between Chile (Errante), Sweden (Pråmfilm AB) and Uruguay (Gabinete films). The film will have its premiere on March 7.

While Otro sol , debut feature by Francisco Rodríguez Teare will have its premiere on March 4. A co-production between Chile (Araucaria Cine), France (Don Quichotte Films) and Belgium (Michigan Films) that arrives in Malaga after winning the Latin American competition at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival.

Documentaries/Short Films Official Section

To this great presence is added the participation of La diosa quebrada in the short documentary competition. A short film directed by Ximena Pereira in co-production with Venezuela and which will have its premiere on March 3.

3 Chileans join the Jury and Malaga team

The Malaga Film Festival will be enriched with the outstanding participation of three talented Chilean professionals who will play key roles as juries in different competitions.

Antonia Zegers, a renowned actress and an important part of the development of Chilean cinema in the last fifteen years, joins the jury of the Official Feature Film Section, where she will share with important professionals such as Jose Luis Rebordinos and Daniela Fejerman, among others. During her career she has participated in more than 15 productions, highlighting The Punishment, by Matías Bize with which she has won 6 awards for best actress since its premiere in 2022.

Meanwhile, Luisa Mayol, a prominent Chilean actress resident in Spain since 2015, will assume the role of jury in the Zonazine category. Her career in Chile stands out with Los 80 for Canal 13, Esperanza and No abras la puerta by TVN channel, among others. While on the international scene she premiered Fatum by Juan Galiñanes, where she played Lidia, one of the main characters.

Completing this outstanding trio, Matías Rebolledo, film critic member of the nonfiction selection committee of the AICE Feroz Awards and jury at the Forqué Awards, will be the Critics’ Jury, sharing with prominent journalists such as Laia Portaceli and Moisés Rodríguez.

MAFIZ :  8 PROJECTS AND 4 CHILEAN AWARDS

From 4 to 8 March, the MAFIZ will be held as the main meeting point of the industry area of the Festival. This time again, in collaboration with MAFIZ, Chilean producer and postproducer Yagan Films along with SANFIC (Santiago Festival Internacional de Cine) and SANFIC Industria, will give out four awards in two sections of Malaga Festival Industry Zone (MAFIZ) an initiative that strengthens the presence of the Chilean audiovisual industry internationally.

In turn, the Chilean presence will be found in the following sections:

Málaga Festival Fund&Co-Production Event

Two Chilean projects were selected from among 120 applications: Room 205 directed by Pablo Díaz del Río, Produced by Patricia Encina, Gabriela Sandoval, Carlos Núñez, Nathalia Videla and Juan Pablo Gugliota and Un amputado directed by Ignacio Pavez and produced by Maximiliano Bolados and Ivo Malinarich.

MÁLAGA WORK IN PROGRES  IBEROAMERICANO (WIP)

Of the seven films selected in this section (already in post-production) three are Chilean. Patio de Chacales, a debut film by Diego Figueroa, produced by Alejandro Ugarte, set during the Pinochet dictatorship and produced by Infractor Films.

Kaye, the second feature by Juan Cáceres, who debuted in 2019 with Perro Bomba (which won three awards at the Malaga Film Festival). Produced by Chilean companies Infractor Films, Pejeperro Films and Pobre Jaula, along with Italian production company Ombre Rosse.

The third title is Sebastián Pereira’s La gran ilusión, produced by Chilean LaWarrior Films. The project was awarded to be part of Málaga WIP during its participation in FIDBA Doc Lab. It is scheduled to premiere in March 2025.

SHOWCASE MÁLAGA – FICVIÑA

MAFIZ,  through the Málaga WIP, celebrates its first edition of the Malaga Showcase, a film exhibition program in Work in progress organized in conjunction with FICViña.

From 4 to 8 March this year, “FICVIÑA WITH MÁLAGA” will present to sales agents, distributors, programmers, post production companies and producers accredited in MAFIZ 2024 the selection of feature films awarded in the last edition of FicViña.

Here are the participating projects:

La verdadera historia de People In The Dragon, by Pablo Green (Lanza Verde, Tercer mundo, Chile).  In search of international premiere, sales and distribution agent.

El Plan de Miguel by Pablo Stephens (NEOFILMS, Chile). Looking for an international premiere, distribution and sales agent.

Después de la niebla. by Miriam Heard(Productora -1cine, Echo art films, Chile). In search of European co-producers for post production, distribution and sales agent.

 #300 CARTAS  by Lucas Santa Ana (Matchbox films, Locodelaltillo, Argentina).

Jero and Tom are the couple that everyone envies. In search of co-production for the finalization of sound post production, and co-production to purchase musical rights of pre-existing songs, as well as color correction and distribution.
