FORUM Section at the Berlinale will exhibit film by Valeria Sarmiento and Raúl Ruiz

January 21, 2020

The Tango of the Widower and its Distorting Mirror is the title of the film directed by Raúl Ruiz and Valeria Sarmiento that will have its world premiere in the Forum section of the prestigious Berlin Film Festival (February 20th to March 1st) in addition to kicking off the category. Valeria Sarmiento is a prolific Chilean filmmaker and editor and the one responsible for concluding the piece that late filmmaker Raúl Ruiz initiated in 1967.

Working alongside Sarmiento was the team behind the production company Poetastros, comprised of actress and producer Chamila Rodríguez and audiovisual professional Galut Alarcón, who were also responsible in 2016 and 2017 for rescuing and reconstructing the material from the film The Wandering Soap Opera, also by Ruiz. Meanwhile, this film, like the majority of Ruiz’s filmography, boasts the collaboration of musician Jorge Arriagada, who was in charge of the score.

The objective of the Forum space is to expand comprehension of what makes a film, put conventional limits to the test, and open new perspectives to help understand cinema and how it relates to the world in new ways. With an average of 40 films per edition, Forum focuses on contemporary international film productions and avoids conventional distinctions, such as that which exists between fiction and documentary.
