The Chilean audiovisual industry dazzles with 45 international awards won in this first semester

August 20, 2022

These few months have left us amazed… The national cinema has learned to adapt, forge new connections, grow even more and create new content in spite of these uncertain and volatile times.

Without a doubt, this series of events that have happened during the last 6 months of 2022 have demonstrated the greatness of Chilean cinema, where only in this period have reached 45 awards, both in Festivals and in industry meetings. Check out this great start and review that we have done with so much pride and joy for the entire industry and national audience!

“We are living in this first half of the year a recognition not only in quantitative terms, but also in matters of a quality that shows that Chilean cinema and series maintain and increase their consolidation worldwide achieved with new and established directors, with strong co-productions, and an outstanding female presence: 8 female directors” says Gabriela Sandoval, president of Apct.

The great season of Chilean cinema

Even awards from Academies and also regional awards such as Film Days; Goya for Best Ibero-American Film or the Platino Awards, demonstrate the success and recognition of the national audiovisual industry.

According to the statistics made by CinemaChile -institution created by APCT and ProChile- which represents the brand of Chilean audiovisual worldwide. We have received 45 international awards of which come from films such as Beast, Private Messages and 1976 and others such as The mole agent , Immersion, My brothers dream awake and Gaucho Americano, who again position themselves in Festivals after their success in 2021.

The path and success of co-productions does not go unnoticed. During this season, Chilean co-productions such as Alis by Colombian directors Clare Weiskopf and Nicolás Van Hemelryck ; Argentine director Juan Pablo Félix’s Karnawal; and Leonardo Brzezicki’s Ámame began to position themselves successfully in festivals.

“Awards are being obtained not only under artistic categories, but also techniques such as the one obtained at the Malaga Film Festival (Spain) for Best Editing to Rodrigo Saquel of the film Private Messages by Matías Bize” concludes Gabriela Sandoval.

In addition to the great productions that have won more than one award, this first semester Chile crossed the mountain range and left the bar high in the Goya and Platino Awards, after being granted the most important award of Ibero-American cinema.

NEW FORMATS

Chilean animation has captivated the whole world once again. The animated films produced in Chile have not stopped innovating with their aesthetic and narrative resources, daring to explore the hybridization of genres and formats.

These new creators have given us great joys and we are only 6 months into 2022!

During this first semester #Normasdegénerobinaria: girls by Bernarda Ojeda and Cristián Freire, were granted the award for best Ibero-American animation at the Quirino Awards.

But that’s not all. Beast by Hugo Covarrubias, made history for the national animation once more. With an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Short Film and 5 awards traveling through Clermont Ferrand Short Film Festival; SXSW Film Festival; Toulouse Festival and the Quirino Awards, the short film produced by Tevo Díaz has positioned itself as one of the most commented titles of the last year in the world of animation cinema.

The first semester and the important national presence in festivals, has also managed to highlight filmmakers such as Roberto Doveris and Javier de Miguel who after having their international premiere in festivals such as Rotterdam and BOGOSHORTS were awarded prizes at the great International Independent Film Festival of Argentina BAFICI.

NEW VOICES IN CHILEAN AUDIOVISUAL

But it’s not just the finished productions that have caught everyone’s eye. Of the 45 awards, 17 correspond to projects presented in markets such as Cannes, where there were two awards granted to Malqueridas by Tana Gilbert and Tomás Woodroffe’s Erratic Blocks,  in the industry section.

For Gabriela Sandoval, President of The Film and Television Producers Guild APCT, this shows the importance of the Industry Awards, which are usually the prelude to the festival circuit.

These figures undoubtedly show the strength of coming up talents such as Vinko Tomicic’s The dog thief who won 7 Awards in Guadalajara Construye, industry section in the last edition of the Mexican Festival, event in which also A woman wants to die by Constanza Figari won 3 Awards in the Co-production Meeting and Señorita de buena presencia by Natalia Luque with 1 prize in the Co-production Meeting as well. But also the recognitions have come from distant places like When clouds hide the shadow by José Luis Torres Leiva who won the Jeonju Cinema Project Fund: Next Edition (South Korea).
