CHILE AIMS TO REVOLUTIONIZE MIP CANCÚN 2024 WITH ORIGINAL AUDIOVISUAL PROPOSALS

November 18, 2024

Seven of Chile’s most renowned production companies are set to attend Latin America’s premier television event, aiming to conquer the international market, establish new partnerships, and secure financing, distribution, or co-production agreements.

Afro Films, Dinogorila Creative Lab, Fabula, Parox, Praxia Producciones, Quijote Films, and Valcine will participate in one of the most significant gatherings for the TV and series industry, taking place from November 19 to 21 in Cancún. This event brings together over 800 delegates from 45 countries, including 200 potential buyers of Chilean productions.

Mip Cancún convenes the global media and entertainment industry, gathering the most influential buyers, producers, development executives, and distributors in the international television and streaming sectors. The goal is to foster idea exchange, networking, sales, and meetings while transforming opportunities into lasting business ventures.

For Gabriela Sandoval and Alexandra Galvis, co-coordinators of CinemaChile, this event is vital for the development of Chile’s television and streaming industry. Sandoval highlights that “it’s an incredible strategic opportunity for buyers and distributors worldwide to discover the diversity and potential of Chilean productions.” Galvis emphasizes “the importance of positioning Chilean content for new audiences and regions, expanding its reach beyond traditional markets.”

Five out of the seven professionals attending the Mexican market will receive funding from the Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Heritage through its International Markets Participation Support Program, under the Council of Audiovisual Arts and Industry (CAIA), with strategic backing from ProChile. The funded attendees are Sebastián Araya from Afro Films, Carlos Ulisse Luz from Dinogorila Creative Lab, Álvaro Cabello from Fabula, Sergio Gándara from Parox, and Amanda Puga from Praxia Producciones.

Minister of Cultures, Arts, and Heritage Carolina Arredondo underscores the significance of this participation: “The Chilean delegation’s presence at MIP Cancún is crucial for our national television and streaming industry. It allows participants to establish direct contacts and secure deals with potential international buyers. This fosters the exchange of ideas and networks, generates sales, and ultimately materializes agreements that strengthen the projects of local creators.”

STORIES THAT WILL MAKE WAVES
The Chilean delegation will arrive at the event with a diverse array of themes and styles, from dark humor and horror thrillers to social drama and fantasy.

Raúl Vilches, Head of the Creative Industries Department at ProChile, states, “The public-private collaboration driven by ProChile and CinemaChile plays a pivotal role in the internationalization of Chile’s audiovisual industry. It promotes the presence of our productions in global markets. Mip Cancún is a key market for Latin America and the United States, offering Chilean production companies a significant opportunity to secure co-production, financing, and distribution agreements for projects still in development. These opportunities are vital to supporting the national audiovisual industry.”

Afro Films will present 6 Vidas / & Lives, a drama-action series about a group of undocumented individuals crossing the treacherous Colombia-Panama border, led by a ruthless smuggler, risking their lives in the process.

Fabula will showcase Quemar tu casa / Burn it down, a horror series following a young woman who moves with her partner to a mysterious house in an apparently perfect neighborhood, only to discover she is the next sacrifice of a sinister witch community.

A national theater classic arrives in series format with Carmela en la Pérgola de las flores / Carmela at the flower market, a story about the traditional Santiago flower market facing threats, as the pergola workers, led by Carmela, stand their ground in defiance.

Humor will also take center stage with El funeral del señor Maturana / Mr. Maturana’s Funeral, a comedy about four bankrupt lawyers who concoct a scheme to host the funeral of the infamous Mr. Maturana. The only catch? Maturana doesn’t exist. This is the story of an elaborate scam.

In the animated category, Hola Flinko / Hi Flinko returns with its second season. This heartwarming series follows an adventurous platypus traveling the world, meeting animals, and helping his new “animammal” friends.

Quijote Films will present Morir de pie / To Die On Your Feet, a psychological drama exploring a protagonist’s emotional numbness after witnessing a death without reacting. Valcine joins with La cocinera / The Cook, the tale of a modest cook who murders her partner and turns the act into a dangerously addictive dish, using it to secure fame, evade jail, and protect her daughter.

The participation of this group of Chilean producers at MIP Cancún reflects the remarkable growth and consolidation of Chile’s audiovisual industry. With projects featuring exceptional technical quality, innovative narratives, and profound social and cultural impact, these production companies aim to not only establish themselves in the international market but also forge strategic alliances that drive the development of high-quality content and expand their global reach.
