The films of Chilean directors Andrés Wood and Marialy Rivas compete in the World Dramatic category of this prestigious film festival which takes place in Utah from january 19 to 29 of 2012.

CINEMACHILE- JANUARY 2012. The films “YOUND AND WILD” by Marialy Rivas and “VIOLETA WENT TO HEAVEN” of director Andres Wood, will represent Chile at the 2012 version of the prestigious Sundance Film Festival. Both films will compete in the World Dramatic category, section that selected 14 films from around the world with the objective of exhibiting the talent of emerging independent cinema directors and artists .

Each year the Sundance Film Festival selects 200 films for exhibition from more than 9,000 submissions. More than 50,000 people attend screenings in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance, Utah. In addition to discovering filmmaking’s newest talent through the Festival’s program of documentary, dramatic, and short films, Festivalgoers experience live music performances, panel discussions with leading filmmakers and industry figures, cutting-edge media installations, parties celebrating the Festival community, and more.

“Chilean cinema has won its own spot among international film critics and spectators, exporting quality films to the main festivals and markets around the world, that is why it is so important to have a sole brand unitying the Chilean audiovisual production under one name. This allows to nurture and strengthen the prestige and tradition that Chilean cinema has won over the years, including progressively the same success for tv contents developed in Chile”, said Constanza Arenas, executive director of CINEMACHILE.

CHILEAN CINEMA

“YOUNG AND WILD” is Marialy Rivas’s last film and tells the story Daniela, a petite, pretty teenager raised in the bosom of a strict and well-to-do evangelical family in Santiago, Chile. Daniela is also a 17-year-old who finds that her raging sexual drive is difficult to reconcile with the orders of her religion. With no outlet for her desire, Daniela taps into a rampant underground network of other horny teenagers through her sexually charged blog. The film will be screened at Berlin film festival on february an will later have its chilean premiere in may. Last year, her short film “BLOCKS” (“BLOKES”) won best short film at Miami International Film Festival.

The other film in competition is “VIOLETA WENT TO HEAVEN”, by Andrés Wood, a promising director who has possitioned Chilean cinema on an international level with the films “MACHUCA” and “THE GOOD LIFE”, later production that won the Goya for best Hispanicamerican Film en 2009. Like a Chilean Edith Piaf or Bob Dylan, Violeta Parra was a folksinger and pop culture icon whose songs, like “Gracias a la Vida,” expressed the soul of her nation and protested social injustice. “VIOLETA WENT TO HEAVEN” tells Parra’s extraordinary story, tracing her evolution from impoverished child to international sensation to Chile’s national hero, while capturing the swirling intensity of her inner contradictions, fallibilities, and passions.
