What is THE WEEK OF CHILEAN CINEMA ?
Executive Director of CinemaChile
As long as Chile continues to have limited, scarce and almost unreachable windows of film distribution for our cinema, CinemaChile will continue opening doors of international opportunities for our production. Over the past 10 years we achieved this within an industry context that houses only a specialized circuit. For the next 10 years, we will look to accomplish this on a broader level, with the international audience and public.
We will begin this 2019 first semester with three European capitals of world cinema: Madrid-Paris-Berlin, to later on move to Los Angeles during the second semester. In each of these four destinations, the best Chilean films of the last decade will be shown in one week, films chosen by a prestigious international selection committee, made up of directors and programmers of festivals as important as the Berlinale, Sundance, Toronto, Tribeca, Karlovy Vary, Venice and San Sebastian. In the pages of this catalogue you can
find out the detailed information of our committee, and share with us the honor of having such outstanding personalities deeply involved with Chilean cinema.
Our international committee received a list of 60 Chilean titles, premiered between 2009 and 2018 in A class festivals. Among those titles, each member of the committee selected 10 films: one title per year, corresponding to what each considered the most outstanding film in each of the years of CinemaChile’s existence. And this is how we arrived to the 10 films in THE WEEK OF CHILEAN CINEMA, which is of course a small but very significant sample of talent and quality that identifies us as a cinematographic country.
We take this opportunity to give our heart-to-heart recognition and thanks to our friends and collaborators who accepted with such enthusiasm to participate in this anniversary endeavor!
10 years of audiovisual storytelling in the heart of everything we do.
Executive Director of CinemaChile
Over the last decade, the success of Chilean cinema (and audiovisual production in all its formats) has been overwhelming: two Oscars, Goyas, Bears, Leopards, Independent Spirits, Emmys, Tigers…and the list goes on and on. These historic achievements speak for themselves and there is little to add that has not already been said by the press, critics and specialists: Chilean cinema has long ceased to be just a simple trend, and has become one of the most relevant cinematographies in Latin America. A phenomenon, even more remarkable, that has occurred in defiance of our geopolitical position on the audiovisual map, and small size, in addition to the internal difficulties in consolidating a Chilean audiovisual industry. Therefore, given that Chilean cinema has already earned a reputation for its own merit, we will dedicate these words to the reconstruction of the road well traveled as an International Promotion Agency. The journey of CinemaChile.
Ten years ago, in Chile we sensed a very contagious creative energy among those of us who worked in film: a vibrant and inspiring force. A new generation was bubbling in creative camaraderie. Movies were the discussion of the day, films were made with new themes and languages. And we began to feel that Chile was too small for us.
Going out into the world at that time was a bit like entering a jungle, breaking through the weeds with a machete. Without a certain network of contacts, without anyone knowing about us, we understood that our individual effort was not enough. One film, one producer and one director setting up worldwide networks were not going to be enough to make Chilean cinema a phenomenon that could be sustained over time, and whose achievements were going to pass from something sporadic to the norm. We did not want to be a comet. We dreamt of being the Milky Way.
Transforming single achievements into a collective phenomenon was CinemaChile’s mission since 2009, the year of its creation. With that goal in mind, the Association of Film and Television Producers (APCT) partnered with Prochile to create the sectorial brand CinemaChile, today an international promotion office constituted by 13 professionals.
Our day-to-day is to connect all the players of our sector, to join them with the international circuit and boost their careers. Connecting is also informing the media, international festivals, sales agents and distributors, all professionals from the international industry. We are like the information headquarters of Chilean cinema and audiovisual, always updated and usually delivering on time.
In addition to this, which is the heart of our promotion strategy, we have also dedicated ourselves arduously to raise other types of information, related to industrial processes and the functioning of the international market. This has allowed us to benefit our creations in all stages of the production workflow, and has meant that any film made in Chile considers from its origin the importance of the global circuit. Today, in order for a local film to reach the destination that is proposed to, instead of going out to the jungle with a machete, can take a well-lit and signposted highway. That, we believe, summarizes the hard work of CinemaChile over the last 10 years.
In order to celebrate, we wanted to expand even more our communication territory. THE WEEK OF CHILEAN CINEMA – an itinerant program of 10 national titles – is the way to reach new international spectators: the global audience.
